Uproar in Kolkata After Gangrape Incident, BJP Protests Against Mamata Government; Union Minister Sukanta Majumdar Detained (Source: Social Media)
The political atmosphere in West Bengal is tense following the alleged gang rape of a female student at a law college in Kolkata. The state government led by Mamata Banerjee was forcefully targeted by massive protests by the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP). During the protest, Union Minister and Bengal BJP President Sukanta Majumdar was taken into custody.
Speaking after his detention, Sukanta Majumdar said, "This is the true face of democracy in Bengal. CM has destroyed democratic values in the state. The police have detained me along with several other party workers."
The National Commission for Women (NCW) has written to West Bengal Chief Secretary Manoj Pant, demanding immediate action in the gang rape case involving the law college student. The NCW has also requested cooperation from the state police to facilitate a meeting between the commission's member and the victim as well as her family.
The tragedy has shaken the public's collective consciousness, according to NCW Chairperson Vijaya Rahatkar, who termed the incident extremely serious. The commission took suo motu cognisance of the case after it came to light on Friday. He had earlier written to Kolkata CP Manoj Verma, requesting an immediate and time-bound investigation.
Suvendu Adhikari, Leader of the Opposition in the Bengal Assembly, launched a fierce attack on the Mamata government on Saturday, citing the deteriorating law and order situation. He said, "Women and girls are not safe in Bengal under the rule of a woman chief minister."
He demanded the imposition of President's Rule and deployment of Army and Central Forces in the state. During the protest, BJP legislators said, "Law and order has completely collapsed in Bengal. President's Rule or Article 355 should be invoked, and Army or paramilitary forces should be deployed."
They further stated, "Until Mamata Banerjee is removed from power, such incidents will continue. The entire Trinamool Congress is filled with rapists, corrupt individuals, and anti-nation"
